(Seeing a "Hit" from a Distance as Fish Grabs my bait at a local Beaver Pond -Roy M) FISHING WITH LOW VISION A veteran who attended the WBRC realized his fishing days did not need to be over just because he had lost vision. He started researching what would help him the most once he was back out on the water. Preliminary evaluations indicated that white was considerably more visible than yellow. His Manual Skills instructor found a potentially more visible bobber at the "Bobber with a Brain" website. This bobber stands above the water with a colored Styrofoam ball on a plastic rod. The bobbers I purchased had 3 colors--bright green; orange/red and yellow. The respective distance that I could see their reflection was --28, 35 and 60 feet. To evaluate a reflective material, the addition of a small string of gold glitter such as Christmas garland, was visible on the line at 110 feet. The veteran also added glitter to the bobber for reflective purposes. An all white reflective bobber called "Glow Leuer" was visible at 75 feet. The veteran who completed these tests has vision that varies throughout the day. The sightings and measurements were taken in full sunlight. The outcome revealed that a bright, light reflective bobber, preferably white was the most beneficial. The initial bobbers were purchased on the internet at www.bigtentackle.com. The "Glow Leuer was purchased locally but is available at: Lindy Little Joe, Inc.-Box C, 1110 Wright Street-Brainerd, MN 56401. A little creativity, a little motivation and the sport still belongs to a man who loves to fish. If your rod and reel is getting dusty this might be the time to find out how you can adapt the equipment you have to make it easier to see or try something new altogether. (-A Veteran Wrote this)
